Medal of Honor Winner Captain Ed Freeman

You’re a 19 year old kid. You’re critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. It’s November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray.

Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.

You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you’re not getting out.

Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you’ll never see them again.

As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then – over the machine gun noise – you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter.

You look up to see a Huey coming in. But.. It doesn’t seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it.

Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you.

He’s not MedEvac so it’s not his job, but he heard the radio call and decided he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.

Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses and safety.

And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!! Until all the wounded were out. No one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm.

He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey.

Medal of Honor Recipient, Captain Ed Freeman, United States Air Force, died last Wednesday at the age of 70, in Boise , Idaho May God Bless and Rest His Soul.

I bet you didn’t hear about this hero’s passing, but we’ve sure seen a whole bunch about Lindsay Lohan, Tiger Woods and the bickering of congress over Health Reform. Shame on the American media !!!

  3. I don’t understand how a great hero with a amazing story cant make the top headlines on the news. Ed Freeman is a great Hero and Inspiration.

  4. It’s unfortunate that true heroes story like this don’t make the top news headlines in our everyday lives, however it’s these acts of bravery that allow us to have the freedom based country that we have today.

  7. Iv never herd of this man but I wish I had. Knowing that true Hero’s are not mentioned in the media is terrible. The ones that truly deserve it should be announced to the world.

  8. This story is great. The man is a true hero and a person that everyone should look up to. It is sad how the American Media honestly does not care about heroes like these. The media is just interested in celebrities and how they spend there day basically. We need to acknowledge people that do amazing things like this.

  9. It is as though military participation is glorified in high schools to recruit young able bodied civilians for our militia. A lot of people are not prepared for life in the military and situations like the one above occur. there are heroes out there that are under appreciated it is a shame.

  10. The things individuals do just to save the lives of men they don’t even know. He was wounded himself and yet he kept going back to save all 29 of the men. May be rest in peace and a hero of the war .

  11. I like reading about this type of stories because this is reality and not the media trying to get some money out of it. Besides all the problems most people have these days, there are real heroes out there that will risk their lives for others. I wish this type of information was brought up more often to recognize who the real important people are.

  12. It is sad that our news is filled with gossip about celebs instead of heros like in this story.

  13. It’s sad how the news rarely speaks of issues from other countries. This person is a hero. It’s great to read stories like this. Ed Freeman will be remembered by all those whom he saved.

  14. It’s sad how the news rarely speaks of issues from other countries. This person is a hero.

  15. Its saddenning how the media hardly ever puts forth good news that awknowledges heroes like this, but is always willing to give informtion on what celebrites are up to. But regarding this story, it is heart warming, and there needs to be more individuals like this in the world.

  16. The American Media honestly does not care about heroes like these, which is the sad part. The media is just interested in celebrities and how they spend there day basically. I hope this changes soon though, I would much rather hear about an inspiring story than about Kim Kardashian’s 20th wedding.

  17. Its great to see Major Freeman get recognition from somewhere. Every time a war hero dies it is a huge deal in certain social circles, those of active military and veterans. Though the public may forget or naively ignore the existence of such heroes, it is good to know that some, at least, see there worth.

  18. this a great story about a great man that put his life on the line for others . these are the people that USA should be idolizing not the people that make are culture looked down upon.

  19. This is a real hero. The media only focus on reality shows, fashion, and to what is new. Ed Freeman is a person people should look up to. This man risk his life for others.

  20. This is an amazing and heroic story. It makes me angry that the media would cover celebrity stories rather than true heroic ones as said here. there could be so many other heroes like him fighting, but you will never hear their stories.

  21. Captain Ed Freeman’s story is very heroic. Thats amazing that he heard the radio call for no more air evacuations because the enemy fire was so heavy and he flew in anyways. It wasnt even his job to medevacuate people but he did it anyways because he knew soldiers needed him.

  22. This was an amazing story it is just said how we do not notice this kind of people. Ed Freeman is just a great hero and everyone should be like him it is so sad he past aways but with just one person knowing about him that didnt know about him he done this job right. he was a great hero.

  23. This man deserves way more recognition for what he did. He is a true hero and a person that everyone should look up to.

  24. This guy is a true hero, He really should be publicized more and people should look up to people like him and not people like Kanye West.

  25. I believe the media is out to capture a younger audience. I dont agree with it, but it is what it is. Today’s top stories are about celeberty drug addicts and reckless teens. These stories are irrelevent to society and are only written for viewers entertainment. People need to be aware of the real heroes in America, not some celebrity drug addict.

  26. I agree with everyone who has posted on this topic. It is just hard to comprehend how focused the mainstream media is on vanity and materials. People like this make many celebrities that are in the news look extremely shallow.

  27. The media should stop focusing on the private lives of celebrities and focus on what really matter! Stories like these are inspirational to people and they can learn from these kinds of stories!

  28. So true. Our society is caught up in the media that displays famous people’s bad ways instead pointing out the good and emphasizing a hero.

  29. Over Lindsay Lohan and Tiger Woods I would have much rather heard about the passing of this great man! What he did was phenominal.

  30. Putting others before yourself is incredible to me. He is truly an American hero!

  31. This truly is a shame on American media! This hero saved so many people and it was not even his job to do so. He risked his life, to save others who most likely were going to die. I never heard any of this on any news station but having read this I truly respect the man and hats of to him.

  32. Its amazing to hear stories as this. This man put his life on the line to do a job that wasn’t even his. This man has great heart and may his soul rest in peace. Only if America would take the time out to recognize great hero’s like this. Instead of talking about such irrelevant issues daily .

  33. It is true that most people that have accomplished something extremely great are left in the dark… what and where celebrities are eating is more important, right?

  34. This is exactly why I don’t watch the news. It is completely pointless and caters to censorship. The things people should hear and often times need to hear are the last things the media will ever report on. I have an immense respect for the unsung heroes such as Ed Freeman.

  35. Wow, this man is a true american hero he is what every service member should strive to be when the call to duty comes. Having the courage and commitment to do what he did for his men deserves so much more than a medal. Because of him 28 young soldiers, and marines got to come home to see their families, and kids. Its sad how our media cares more about a washed up artist who overdosed, than those military veterans who lost their lives making the ultamite sacrafice for our nation.

  36. this man deserves a better way of telling his story. its sad how we forget about heroes like this. we need to acknowledge people that do amazing things like this.

  37. This man deserves a front page story about all the wonderful acts he performed, however the media is too busy covering Jackson’s doctor other people mentioned in this article. Very sad!

  38. wow this was absolutely amazing what he did and he wasn’t even recognized as a hero for his death.

  39. In America there are many things that we get distracted by and dont pay attention to and its sad that we dont honor great people such as Ed Freeman

  40. This is amazing and so unselfish. He risked his life countless times to save the lives of all these men, and in doing so got shot 4 times in the legs and arms. This man is the definition of a true hero.

  41. Knowing so many people in the military, it kills me to see veterans that do something so grateful during a time like that, and when they pass way, there in no recognition, or reflecting back for what was done. He was the definition of one of the many true heroes there are.

  42. The Media is pretty ridiculous lately! Instead of talking about, and showing meaningful things like this, we hear about crazy celebrities who only do certain things for the media’s attention. Captain Ed Freeman definitely deserved to be honored. There could be many other heroes like this around, but we would never hear about them. It’s actually really sad.

  43. A great example of service before self.

  44. This was a great man that saved many lives that day with not only bring the wounded soldiers a ride to safety but also running in much needed supplies and reinforcements. He did this aginist all odds and survived. America media cares nothing for the heros of this nation, they only care about the biggest names.

  45. Wow! I toatally agree with media always having news on the people that do not really matter. All they have is fame. This man is a big hero and I never heard anything abourt him passing away. It was sad reading this article. Ed Freeman had great honor to save so many lives.

  46. It is pretty sad how we can ignore an amazing hero like this one here. The society really does focus on a lot more inappropriate subjects rather then honoring a hero like Ed Freeman.
