Tobacco Smoke Enemas (1750s-1810s)

The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims. A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a
fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum. The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration, but doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phrase

“blowin’smoke up your ass”.

It has been reintroduced in Washington , by the Obama Administration as an integral part of the New Health Care Program.

  1. Why is the tool being used now? Is it any good? Are there any better tools than this?

  2. I would have said a pump of some sort but never expected it to be used for what it’s used for very interesting .

  3. I was thinking of an odd looking type of pump. But, now I know what this is for! Hahahha.. this is very funny lol. Pretty interesting tool, never thought that this kind of tool ever existed.

  4. Rosamaria Valdez-Lopez

Oh my goodness. I would have never thought that phase was to be taken literal! This is crazy, but now I can go home and tell my mom that this is real and hopefully she will disagree and we could make a bet on it and I will win.

  5. I thought it had to do with the booty area, but for what I did not know. Glad to gain knowledge of where the phrase, “blowingsmoke up your butt” came from

  6. That’s where the saying “blowing smoke up your ass” comes from. hahahah

  7. What?? I believe we have made more advance in our knowledge towards health to were we don’t have to “blow smoke up our ass” . I find it very appalling that Obama would try to reintroduce something so primitive and outdated.

  8. What kind of technology is this?! why the hell would I want smoke blown up my anus?! At first, I believed it was the tool to measure blood pressure but I guess I was way off! This tool is really mind-boggling to me. weird!!

  9. What the heck? We used to do some crazy things back in the day. What on Earth is Obama doing reintroducing this?

  10. It’s crazy some of the things we did back in the day before we understood how the human body actually worked. im not really suprised that they used to do that but im so glad we don’t do it in today’s medical field, and it should stay like that.

  11. Wow i was scratching my head i have know idea what the picture was. Now i know where the phrase “blowing smoke up your ass” comes from haha.

  12. Haha so is that were the term “Blowin’ smoke up your ass” comes from? Thank God our medicinal practices are more advance today.

  13. To completely be honest I had no clue at all to what this tool was. Kinda pretty gross what they used it for can’t believe its be reintroduced!

  14. Its crazy how it takes all of that to just blow air into someones behind.

  15. I guessed that it had something to do with smoke blowing somewhere…just wasn’t sure where. A Tobacco Enema does not sound fun at all, but I guess it would be useful to resuscitating a drowning victim! The origin of the phrase “blowin’ smoke up your ass” totally makes sense now that I know where it came from.

  16. I had no clue what this was. I can’t believe that people actually did this. People go to weird lengths for certain things.

  17. I do not know why but when i first saw the picture I thought it was a shower head… Still close enough.

  18. I though it was a pepper shaker…. ha. oops, this is really funny but its also interesting as to how far medicine has come.

  19. When I saw this picture, I had no idea what that tool was. But when I read it was a tool used as an enema, it seemed more believable. But now I understand where all those expressions come from.

  20. This goes to show people how far we, as humans, are willing to go to ward off death for as long as possible, and how far we have come in our understanding of th ebody. We should celebrate science for its odd achievements, however dangerous and immoral (as deemed by a society) they may be, and our endevours to keep clear of such methods in the treatment of our bodies. Doctors are no longer allowed to smoke during surgery, after all.

  21. When I saw this picture I had no idea what it was. It is weird that they used this kind of tool back then.

  22. It’s odd to read about how they handled medicine back then and compare it to now. Treatments years and years ago were beyond bizzare and some of them are quite hard to put a finger on the logic they used to come up with them. At least I now know where that saying came from.

  23. hhahah I thought the term ” Blowing smoke up your ass” was used as a metaphor, but now I guess it’s been real for awhile!! I dont understand how any person would find this amusing, but i guess if you’re into that weird stuff it’s okay. Whatever tickles your fancy 😉

  24. My guess was way off! I would have never thought this tool would be used for blowing smoke up the anus. It’s hard to believe that this tool was created and actually used for such purposes during the 1700/1800’s. Ew.

  25. I love learning where these ‘sayings’ come from. I’d prefer that they didn’t implement this procedure in the medical field because, as far as I know, it will cause a sharp increase in rectal cancer. It’s bad enough having to breath smoke in through your mouth, but to have put in your anal cavity as well is superfluous.

  26. Hahaha! For resuscitating drowning victims?? How does that work? This is funny. I also saw a show about people who are addicted to coffee enemas. Crazy man.

  27. My first guess when I saw this image was way off before I looked at the hints then I was just confuced! It is crazy how our methods of treating people for certain things have changed so drasticlly.

  28. Ok so I actually thought the invention was to make a fire. I had no idea it was used for tobacco enema gross! People back then had strang
fetishes like today. I was watching a show where there was a couple who did coffee enemas!

  29. I thought this was like a fancy toilet set decorator, then I read the hint and was confused. Well at least I was half right on the toilet part, hahah!

  30. That was the last thing on my mind when I was guessing what this was. I first thought it was something to put out a fire, like an early fire extinguisher or something. But not a Tobacco Emema, I didn’t even know that they tried things like this. I always wondered where “blowing smoke up your ass” came from and now I know.
